The X-Y positioning system is the key mechanism of the smt placement machine and an important indicator for evaluating the accuracy of the smt placement machine. It has two forms: one is the orthogonal motion of the PCB in the X-Y direction; the other is the X-Y coordinate translation motion by the placementhead, and the PCB is still positioned on the PCB positioning table with certain precision, the two motion methods are all used to accurately pick and place the components to the pads of the PCB.

The structure in which the PCB performs the orthogonal motion in the X-Y direction is commonly found in the placement machine of the tower type rotary head. In this type of high-speed machine, the placement head only performs a rotary motion, and the smtprocess is completed by the horizontal movement of the feeder and the movement of the PCB carrying plane. The placementhead performs the X-Y coordinate translation movement, that is, the placementhead is mounted on the X rail, and the X rail moves in the Y direction, thereby realizing the whole process of the X-Y mountingin the X-Y direction. This type of structure is more common in general-purpose placement machines.


There is also a type of placement machine. The placement head of the placement machine is mounted on the X-guide rail and only moves in the X direction, while the PCB carrier only moves in the Y direction, and the two work together to complete the smtprocess. The feature is that the X and Y guide rails are fixed to the base, and it belongs to a static guide rail structure.
